The Committee on Geographical Sciences at the University of Chicago invites applications for a Senior Lecturer in Geographic Information Science (GIS). The initial appointment will be for a term of one to three years, beginning September 2018, and is renewable contingent upon ongoing curricular need, satisfactory performance review, and budgetary approval. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and benefits.
The successful applicant will teach five courses per year (quarter system), including at least two courses in the current undergraduate GIS track. Other courses should deal with various aspects of GIS and spatial analysis, such as geocomputation, geovisualization, spatial data bases, spatial statistics and spatial optimization. The ideal candidate is also expected to maintain a high level of active engagement with the field at large in order to ensure the UChicago curriculum reflects the latest methodologies and new directions in research, including being an active member of the University of Chicago Center for Spatial Data Science (http://spatial.uchicago.edu)..
Other academic responsibilities will include:
- in partnership with senior faculty, lead ongoing curricular development in an evolving undergraduate major
- develop and implement co-curricular activities to enhance student training and placement, including partnerships with other campus and industry partners
- organize and lead activities designed to recruit undergraduate students to the major
- advise undergraduate majors and other students on quarterly course selection
- advise and support undergraduate students on applications to graduate programs and career searches in related fields
To be eligible, candidates must have the PhD in hand by September 1, 2018. Applicants must also have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and advising/mentoring students.
